We want to start this piece with a little less of our usual pep, and instead hold a bit of reverence for what was an immensely challenging time for not just our vineyard and winery partners, but a huge number of affected Hawke’s Bay and North Island families. All our contacts in the Hawke’s Bay were, and are safe, but 11 people in the region weren’t so lucky, so our hearts go out to those whānau.

But as we start rolling over to more of the 2023 wines from the Hawke’s Bay, we think perhaps it’s time to look at Julz’ Brogden’s statement in the midst of it all and bring those stories to fruition, as Tony Prichard of De La Terre states;

Obviously, while our thoughts were with everyone affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, our winery partners were a big worry for us as we all sat, listening to the rain and wind lashing our own windows and watched the news headlines rolling in, getting increasingly more worrying. Our wineries in the Hawke’s Bay are run by people that we’ve grown very close to over the years – while, yes, they’re business relationships – they know about our kids and lives, and we know about theirs, and if we’re honest, most of our business meetings end up with an open bottle at the end of them, some good yarns and we ultimately consider these people our friends. So we are very pleased to hear how they’ve all fared, which as it happens, is surprisingly well.

Upon returning to New Zealand she commissioned Angela to paint the artworks especially for the wines, so the bottles are always beautiful.

I hope you and family are safe?”…. In answer to this question, I am incredibly fortunate to have come through this unscathed. With his wife and partner-in-wine, Kaye, he crafts elegant and engaging wines that are a delicious fusion of high-tech winemaking knowledge with traditional hands-on winemaking methods in the cellar. From the vineyard to the glass his personal touches are evident in the small volumes of hand-crafted wines from an incredibly quirky mix of grape varieties, such as Tannat, Barbera, Montepulciano, Tempranillo, and Viognier. The Tūtaekurī River bursting damaged the main substation, resulting in phone and internet services getting cut off. The Esk River, famous through Esk Valley Winery, burst its banks and submerged several properties entirely with more than 7 metres of water and silt (one house was moved 600 metres from its original position.) The Ngaruroro River – which Easthope overlooks – burst its banks and flooded a settlement where residents required helicopter rescue. And when the Wairoa River burst its banks it flooded nearly 15% of the town, containing about half the town’s population. The Waipawa River, while it didn’t ‘burst’ was at record high levels and the main route in and out of the region – State Highway 2 – was closed after major landslips.

Rod & Emma at Easthope’s elevation left them in a uniquely privileged position where most of the water flowed to lower terraces. While their view was dramatic, their ‘23 Home Block Chardonnay is already proving itself to be a sell-out and we expect the other releases to follow suit.

Tony & Kaye at De la Terre had some cleanup to do with a lot of silt at the winery. They were without contact for a while due to the outages and had to shut the cellar door, but come harvest time they marvelled at the resilience and quality of the grapes given what they’d endured. We’ve got their chardonnay in stock now, with more goodies on the horizon.

“This wine is pure, fragrant and intriguing barrel aged Cabernet Franc, Collaboration Winemaker”

This 100% Cabernet Franc wine also has elegant, delicate florals, raspberry and dark black fruits. Intertwined with lovely leafy, tobacco and aniseed notes. Velvety, layered, generous and complex with delicate fine grained tannins.

Regarding this vintage, “2020 was warm, long and dry with cool nights resulting in wines of real depth, richness, character and excellent cellaring potential”, (Collaboration website)

Cameron Douglas, 93 points. Outstanding. “Dark berries and olive leaf, dried herbs and black berries. There’s a smoky aspect with barrel spices of clove and baked vanilla. Complex and youthful. Taut and tightly wound on the palate, the core darker red berry fruits show that as this wine settles and ages it wil hold onto the power of the fruit and use the abundant chelky textured tannins, acidity and barrel flavours to develop complexities. A wine that will age well. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035”.

They’re not quite a winery. They’re not quite a vineyard. What they are is a collection of like-minded wine lovers who came together – an amalgamation of all things great about wine.

The cornerstone of Bohemian Wines is collaboration. Head Bohemians, Puneet Dhall & Brandon Nash, collectively have over 30 years experience in the wine industry and they never stop searching for the essence of great wine. After starting up Dhall & Nash together in 2007, they realised they were in a unique position where they could appreciate and see so many different ways of making wines from so many wonderful corners of New Zealand, and each of these were the signatures of winemakers they’d grown to personally know and respect. They knew who they considered to be one of the best Pinot producers in the country, and a woman who was seemingly a jack of all trades and master of all… And so an idea started to form, a vision of curating the best of the best and letting these masters do their thing! A platform where they are free to experiment and create to their heart’s content.

And so came along the Bohemians – The Bohemian, The Poet and The Dancer. A red, a white and a rosé. A collection of beautifully crafted wines from hand-picked masters of craft around New Zealand, who breathe life into characters and notes and bottle them up to present to you.

First came ‘The Bohemian’ flagship Pinot Noir – made by Schubert’s own Kai Schubert in the Wairarapa. Anyone who knows New Zealand Pinot knows Kai is the cream of the crop. In 2015, Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate named one of his Pinots as one of the Top Three NZ Wines, where his Pinots were described as “beautiful, perfumed and earthy”.

Then came ‘The Poet’ Hawke’s Bay Pinot Gris. It is made by Julianne Brogden of Collaboration Wines – a highly celebrated New Zealand winemaker with a passion for food, travel and art. She’s been touted as being one of New Zealand’s real ‘up-and-comers’ and frankly, she makes mind-blowingly good drops. She has brought to the table an artfully crafted, refreshing wine, offering delightful aromas and flavours as its recital.

The ‘baby’ of Bohemian is ‘The Dancer’ Hawke’s Bay Rosé. This is something we are incredibly proud of and excited to have in our portfolio. Also made by veteran Bohemian and fan-favourite, Julz from Collaboration Wines, she worked with Bohemian to create something utterly unique – a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Viognier – unusual and compelling, gorgeous, savoury and so bohemian. We haven’t stopped talking about it since it was released, we simply can’t help it.

What was it that attracted you to the idea of working with the Bohemian Project?

“I enjoy crafting wine for people to share with different cuisines, and most importantly family and friends. To me, wine brings people together, it is a time to sit, enjoy, talk, contemplate, catch up or celebrate an occasion, it is a way of life.

My own personal portfolio is focused on Chardonnay and Bordeaux Reds so when the Dhall and Nash Team approached me to make the Bohemian Rosé and Pinot Gris it was a chance to do something different. I love to craft small batches of wines that are textural, layered and complex, wines that make you want to sip and savour. To be able to use my winemaking skills and apply them to these two wines was another challenge. I am a hands on winemaker and work solely in the winery throughout the year, so it was an opportunity to source and work collaboratively with like minded growers in Hawke’s Bay and have the backing and support of Dhall and Nash with the same passion, commitment and vision to wine growing.”

What’s special about your Bohemian Pinot Gris?

“I will be honest… I have never liked drinking Pinot Gris unless it was reasonably dry, had lovely acidity and interesting… so I made a promise to myself that this wine needed to tick those boxes and bring on board like-minded people, also to be approachable and encourage regular Pinot Gris drinkers to try something a little drier, interesting and textural.

The fruit comes from a beautiful hillside vineyard in Central Hawke’s Bay, Lime Rock. Rosie and Rodger – the proprietors – do a meticulous job of managing this vineyard. The Pinot Gris is grown on volcanic soil over limestone. The resulting wine exhibits a chalky texture and salinity, with fresh aromatics and a lovely backbone of acidity, finishing dry but with plenty of body and texture.”

What’s special about your Bohemian Rosé?

“A very unique, intriguing blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Viognier. The grapes are sourced from a little vineyard situated on the border of the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa growing district. Hand picked at different times in individual batches. Directly pressed as whole berries… Blended and Bottled.”

What’s something you want drinkers of your wine to think the second they pour a glass?

“Sit back, relax and enjoy with fine food and great company!”

Can you tell us a little about the process of making a Bohemian wine with you? What goes on in the vineyard?

“I like to pick the grapes with high acidity so the resulting wines have good acid backbone... I want the wines to be elegant and restrained.

I constantly taste and blend so I cease the yeast fermenting in each wine with a nice balance of fresh acidity and enough sugar to add slight body and texture yet still tastes dry to the finish. With both wines I want an element of savouriness, texture and interest, not just fruit driven wines so I am slightly oxidative in my handling, with minimal SO2.”

What’s your personal all-time favourite wine to sit down with at the end of the day?

“Something a little different, whether it be from a different country, producer, blend or varietal. A wine that is going to make me think and discover something new…”

What would you say was the perfect song match for your Bohemian wines?

“I can’t say I could choose one song… however album would be NZ Artist, Nathan Haines and the album “Shift Left” an older album but recently re released on vinyl.”

2018 Bohemian ‘The Bohemian’ Pinot Noir
Lush, dark summer berry aromas come dancing from the glass, bringing with them notes of plums, exotic spices and liquorice. A smooth and lush entrance of dark plum and forest berries on the palate greets you before introducing an array of spicy notes. Star anise, cloves and an intriguing pepper tone leads to the savoury, mineral core and a delightfully balanced finish that lingers.

2018 Bohemian ‘The Poet’ Pinot Gris
Fresh, green notes adorn the perfume, adding a crisp undertone to the sensory ballad that is ‘The Poet’. Red apple skin, honeydew melon, lychee and ginger account for the rest of this fruity and aromatic composition. A dry character, ‘The Poet’ does not exhibit sweet notes, but instead offers a firm, tight and linear palatable tale, with textured fruity notes of red apple and honeycomb taking the centre-stage. Hold the applause.

“It is so hard to pick just one wine from our portfolio… they all are so exclusive and yummilicious!! But if I had to choose just one then that would certainly be the 2016 Collaboration Impression Red. This wine is just as lovely as the winemaker herself, Julianne Brogden.

Hi Julianne, Can you tell us what is happening in your vineyard at the moment?

Currently the vines are in the final stage of ripening before harvest. The canes of the grape vines change colour and structure from a fleshy, green to brown and hard. ‘Veraison’ a french term used to describe the ‘change of colour of the grape berries’ is underway and usually takes between 40-50 days.

Berries change from small and green to almost doubling in size as sugars accumulate, organic acids decrease and the berries soften and turn to a red/black or a yellow/green. The change in colour is due to the replacement of Chlorophyll, which is green to the human eye in exchange for anthocyanins in red grapes and caratenoids for white grapes……if you can remember back to those Chemistry days??

What do you look for in terms of ripeness?

As I walk the blocks I think about the final wine, how do I want it to taste, flavours, acidity, richness, complexity. For Collaboration Wines, each vineyard site is chosen for a reason be it clonal, site selection or soil, all these factors will affect the grapes at picking and in turn the final wine.

I look and feel the softening of the berries, taste the flavours which can be variable from row to row or vine to vine. I shake the vines to see how vulnerable the grapes are, do they fall off easily or are they hanging in there and finally, I sample the berries uniformly across the block and take the grapes to the lab. The grapes are dejuiced using a strainer, and the juice is extracted from the skins. I look at the percentage of brown to green seeds, smell the skins and look at the colour of the juice.

I test for sugar levels and acid levels, these results will give me a guide to the final alcohol and potential acid in the resulting wine once fermentation has occurred in the winery.

Finally, I go on gut feeling and experience.

How does this vintage look in terms of ripeness and quality thus far?

Coming up to my 23rd vintage and I as far as I’m concerned we are in the hands of mother nature, the weather can change at the drop of a hat! 4 weeks ago I would have said we are behind and late for what would be considered a normal season . Now, with intense heat over the last couple of weeks, veraison has rocketed through and we are looking to be back on schedule. If the warm dry weather continues as predicted we could be looking at another stunning vintage. But, who knows a cyclone may come through, or extreme humidity, a snap of cold weather and the game changes, we are forced to pick dependent on the weather. If anything I’ve learnt just go with the flow and learn from experience and be prepared with your bag of tricks. The only factor that is consistent is the person that guides the wines but even then we are for ever learning and evolving.

What are some of the viticultural techniques you apply that influence fruit ripeness and quality?

Site selection, clonal selection, pruning, shoot thinning, leaf removal, fruit thinning and hand picking are all techniques that are essential to ensuring consistency and quality year after year. For me you need to step back and look at the whole picture and guide the vines and sites accordingly to achieve your final outcome.

What are some of comparisons and contrasts of growing fine wine grapes in Hawkes bay compared to california where you made wine for many years?

8 years winemaking in the Napa Valley and I have to say viticulture and winemaking over there is simpler in comparison to Hawkes Bay. California is spoilt for beautiful, rich, luscious, riper wines year after year, each day seems to deliver calm warm dry weather which makes the jobs both in the vineyard and winery easier. Another side to California is the intense heat day after day which results in climbing sugars and declining acids with physiological ripeness and flavours not in balance. High sugars and thus high alcohols are the outcome, definitely a challenge in itself. In all, California Wines are in a league of their own and I certainly developed a love for these wines. The depth of knowledge and experience in Napa Valley is impressive and I appreciate the layers of complexity that California offers.

Hawke’s Bay’s weather is more variable which can pose challenges so we need to be ready to deal with the various weather patterns and accommodate both in the vineyard and winery. Hawke’s Bay obtains physiological ripeness of the grapes at lower sugar levels meaning lower alcohol levels in the wines. The result is beautiful elegant wines, lovely acidity, richness and elegance that suits an array of cuisines.

For a young region and country in the world of wine, we are fast to learn and accommodate both in the vineyard and winery. In comparison the vineyards and resulting wines are just as good as California but a fraction of the price and Hawkes Bay wines like California certainly reflect their own sense of place.

Fingers crossed – I’m looking forward to seeing what challenges the 2016 Harvest brings to Hawkes Bay and Collaboration Wines.

5 stars

“The very elegant, Bordeaux-like 2013 vintage was hand-picked in Hawkes Bay from ‘ideal sites’, matured for 22 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Full and youthful in colour, it’s notably savoury and supple, full-bodied wine with concentrated, well-ripened blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, oak complexity and fine-grained tannins. Already delicious, it should be at it’s best from 2017 onwards.”

“The 2011 Aurulent Chardonnay offers a promising nose of ripe apricots, muskmelons and honeycomb with suggestions of cedar and toasted almonds. Medium-bodied with a lovely silkiness to the texture, it fills the mouth with honeyed stone fruit and toasty flavors enlivened by a refreshing acid backbone and long finish laced with just a hint of oakiness. Drinking nicely now, it should cellar to 2016+. ”

18/20

“Aurulent is ‘the colour of gold’. Chardonnay fruit from sites with medium to heavy silt soils. Fully barrel-fermented in new and seasoned oak to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months on lees with 100% MLF. Bright straw-colour with light, lemon-gold hues. This has an elegant and tight bouquet of ripe citrus and stone fruit aromas with mealy, nutty notes and very subtle butterscotch MLF and creamy barrel-ferment elements that build in intensity. Medium-full bodied, finely concentrated citrus stone fruit and nutty flavours feature on a soft-textured palate with rounded mouthfeel. An amalgam of barrel-ferment and MLF creaminess is balanced by good underlying acidity that provides tension, and the flavours are driven to a very long and sustained nutty nuanced finish. This is an elegantly creamy, subtly concentrated chardonnay with nutty, stone fruit flavours and a long finish. Serve with roasted poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5 years.”

4 stars

“Already drinking well, the debut 2011 vintage was hand-picked at ‘select vineyard sites’ in Hawkes Bay and fermented and lees-aged for a year in new and older French oak barrels, with full malolactic fermentation. Pale yellow, it is full-bodied and crisp, fleshy and generous, with strong, peachy, citrusy, slightly toasty flavours, woven with fresh acidity. Drink now or cellar.”

“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 Argent Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and ripe plums accented by nuances of cedar, mocha, dried Mediterranean herbs and pencil lead. Medium-bodied and packed with ripe blackberry and toasty oak flavors, it is well structured with a medium to firm level of grainy tannins and a good backbone of acid through the long finish with a pleasant, herbal lift. Drink it now to 2020+.”

“This is a stylish expression of the noble grape, exhibiting lifted aromas of dark fruit, game, tar, cedar and dried herb on the nose. It is ripe and concentrated on the palate with excellent focus and silky texture, finishing superbly long and engaging. This wine is wonderfully balanced, and looks very youthful for it’s age. At it’s best: now to 2024.”

“Elegant cabernet sauvignon with classic blackberry/cassis and cedar flavours. Silken-textured red with fine, soft tannins providing a gentle backbone. Supple wine with a surprisingly lengthy finish. Very approachable now but with cellaring potential.”

“The debut 2010 vintage was hand-harvested at ‘select vineyard sites’ in the Hawkes Bay, blended with a small parcel of merlot, matured for 20 months in French oak barrels (partly new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Full and youthful in colour, with a fragrant, ripe, berths bouquet, it is mouth filling, sweet-fruited and savoury, with generous, plummy, spicy flavours, showing good complexity, fresh acidity and obvious potential. Best drinking 2014+.”

Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, August 2013, Raymond Chan

18+/20

“Argent is the ‘colour of silver’. Cabernet sauvignon from gravelly vineyard sites blended with a small parcel of merlot from heavier soil, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in new and seasoned French oak barrels. Very full, near impenetrable black-red with youthful purple hues. Concentrated, focussed, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant aromas are entwined with subtle plum notes, with pencil shavings and cedary oak elements adding detail. Medium-full bodied and elegantly proportioned, this has a concentrated core of sweetly ripe black berry fruits with liquorice, currant and herb nuances, along with spicy oak. The mouthfeel is textured with fine-grained tannins and the palate is carried somewhat but the acidity, leading to a long, lingering, spicy, black-plum finish. This is a ripe black-fruited cabernet sauvignon with fine tannins and sweet oak. Match with roasted red meats or serve with hard cheeses over the next 7-9 years.”
