Established in 1976 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, at the time it was one of just 40 Napa Valley wineries. Today, there are upwards of 400 now!

In 1978, they released their inaugural vintage: 800 cases of Merlot from the now coveted Three Palms Vineyard and 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag’s Leap District and Howell Mountain – and it was only up from there as they slowly but surely became Merlot royalty.

Duckhorn was named in Wine & Spirits Magazine’s Top 100 Wineries for 2017 (one of only 35 wineries in the U.S. and 20 wineries in California). A similar accolade can be found in The Daily Meal, who named Duckhorn as one of the Top 101 American Wineries for 2017, stating that “since its tightly focused early years, Duckhorn has taken flight…” (hah!) Even Forbes passionately weighed in on the Duckhorn phenomenon, citing all the way back in 2015 that they had “The Best California Merlot Ever”, and then reaffirming their opinions with an article in 2018 highlighting their resounding successes.

And the praise doesn’t just come from critics. Our own Puneet Dhall had this to say after visiting the winery in 2018: “When you enter the Duckhorn Estate, just on the side of Howell Mountain – down the Silverado trail, just outside Rutherford, you begin to see how the super premium side works.
The ‘Decoy’ – Same Same, but Different

So it’s pretty evident that Duckhorn is synonymous with Merlot! But there’s many more arrows in their quiver. Wanting to work with their signature quality, the Duckhorns started to make spin-offs (most appropriately duck themed, of course!) which included Paraduxx, Goldeneye, Migration, Kosta Browne, Decoy, Canvasback and Greenwing – each carving its own unique niche in the portfolio.

1985 saw the first ‘Decoy’ wine launched – a second-label red blend made at Duckhorn Vineyards. This exceptional wine quickly established a loyal following for its great quality, remarkable price, and its distinctive style, which expressed its full charm and complexity in its youth and for Decoy to ultimately in 2008 set itself up as a separate Duckhorn brand as opposed to just being their ‘second-label’. They also added a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as a Rosé and Brut Cuvée.

“Decoy Wine is a unique and affordable wine brand that offers exceptional quality and diverse flavor profiles, making it a must-try for wine enthusiasts of all levels.

Since branching out successfully from their 1600 first case vintages, the quality at Duckhorn has not decreased nor become overly commercialised, “When wine companies grow, there is often an assumption that quality will suffer,” says winemaking vice president and winemaker, Renée Ary, when talking with Haute Living San Francisco. “I think we have disproved that idea. For us, growth has meant new state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, the addition of amazing estate vineyards like Three Palms and the resources to continue to make both widely-distributed and small-production winery-only wines using the kind of hands-on, small-lot techniques that are essential to achieving excellence.”

Duckhorn – and by extension, Decoy’s – philosophy is very people-centred this way, in that they can adopt innovative and modern aids but they remain at their core, very connected to the hands that work to shape their wines. One of these people, Dana Epperson, was mentored by Mark Beringer, a former Duckhorn winemaker. Talking again to HLSF, she explained, “In a way, I studied the Duckhorn style before I ever joined The Duckhorn Portfolio. Mark taught me to have a light touch as a winemaker and to create classic, balanced wines.”

She has brought this philosophy and ethos with her, and is now vice president of winemaking for Decoy.

Wine brand of the year is one thing, but that’s not where Decoy’s praise ends!
“If Château Margaux were in Napa Valley, it would Spottswoode”

Robert Parker Jnr

Clearly, the window of opportunity to acquire an elegant and lusciously lifted Napa Cabernet from top scoring Spottswoode Estate is always a fingers-crossed moment. Luck was on Dhall & Nash’s side, and we have been fortunate to receive another Spottswoode allocation of their newest cuvées, so we inhaled it in one breath! And as this week’s En Primeur, we suggest you do too.

With this 2019 release, Winemaker Aron Weinkauf proves yet again he’s a master of finesse-driven Cabs that channel the historic greats of the past. Impeccably sourced from their organic vineyards in Napa Valley, the virtuoso wines of Spottswoode, are masterfully wrought and deeply tied to their place of origin. They age gracefully and are crafted in a style that’s consistent with the guiding principles of a fine ‘first-growth’ estate while also leaving room for the natural variations of vintage. Ingeniously, they manage to show poise and gentility alongside majestic energy and vivid concentration. The Spottswoode wines are a must-buy for any serious wine collector and connoisseur.

As acclaimed wine writer Jancis Robinson MW writes, “In the Napa Valley Cabernet arena, where muscle and potency seem to have become the most admired, or certainly the most notable attributes, it is unusual to read a producer claiming, ‘we strive for refinement, elegance, and balance’”. However, that old idea that all Californian Cabernet is over-ripe, high alcohol, and lacking in complexity is just that – an old idea. These are seasoned vintners who truly know their land – even through earthquakes, wildfires, and multiple years of drought – then, when Mother Nature gives them half a chance, Spottswoode’s winemakers craft exquisitely expressive Cabernets of great structure and soaring beauty. Read more here on Spottswoode from our 2021 blog.

In the words of Spottswoode’s winemaker and vineyard manager Aron Weinkauf: “We make wines that show great energy, persistence, and longevity. We picture them as one would a yogi master – strong, enduring, and balanced. This is in contrast to the overbuilt, muscular bodybuilder.”

The 2019 vintage in Napa Valley had the unenviable task of following 2018, the region’s new benchmark vintage for Cabernet. But 2019 is no slouch. In fact, it’ll give 2018 a run for its money (in the near-term). The season was marked by significant rainfall over the winter and then again in the middle of May, setting the vineyards up to handle Napa’s typically dry, hot summer, while slightly pushing back the windows for flowering and ripening. Normally, this would be an issue—ripening over the Labour Day weekend usually means ripening during a heat spike, which can result in top-heavy wines. Instead, there was no weather drama in September, which stayed warm, but with very cool nights. The result is a crop of wines that are clearly fruit-driven but retain an inner freshness. They’re not the terroir-driven wines of 2018 (that vintage will ultimately be the vintage that cellars longer), yet the 2019s are brimming with gorgeous fruit flavours while retaining enough acidity for balance. Because of their beautiful cores of fruit, these are wines that Napa Cabernet lovers will likely have a hard time keeping their hands off of in the near-term. (Courtesy of Wine Spectator)

Part of Spottswoode’s storied history inspired the name Lyndenhurst, a tribute to the fragrant linden trees that still bloom in the gardens today. Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon is a dynamic and inviting wine made from grapes grown in the Estate Vineyard blended with those from other acclaimed family-owned vineyards. The Lyndenhurst offers unbelievably great value. Suffice it to say this “second label” would make the first team at most other wineries!

This wine is made to be enjoyed upon release and drinks fresh, with ripe fruit and a luscious mouth-feel. If the Estate Cabernet is Margaux, then the Lyndenhurst is Haut-Medoc.

As James Molesworth so aptly describes in the Wine Spectator: “There’s a delicacy to the Spottswoode Cabernet, but the wine is no pushover. Sneaky long and with tensile strength, it’s a yoga pose held for minutes, in stark contrast with the stereotypical Napa Cab’s bodybuilder reps. It has a uniquely pure feel, and while it’s in a less “obvious” style, its ageability is clear. The wine, like the estate, has the reach to connect Napa’s past to its future.”

Fine wine lovers be warned though… the Spottswoode Estate wines are a hit year after year and have a very limited allocation available in NZ. They will sell out! Fortunately for all you ardent Californian Cab fans, Dhall & Nash has some large format bottles available as well.

The time is perfectly ‘ripe’ to buy NOW to assure you won’t miss out on these Iconic Spottswoode Cabernets!

Sited in the Willamette Valley’s Eola-Amity Hills, Cristom is one of America’s great heritage properties, with a well-deserved reputation. Winemaking has been under the watch of Steve Doerner, a Jacques Seysses (Domaine Dujac) disciple, who has produced every Cristom vintage since the project’s inception in 1993.

Steve’s winemaking style has always been marked by a high proportion of whole-cluster, which contributes an exotic and wide-ranging aromatic profile to his wines, qualities that deepen with time in-bottle. And now with second-generation owner, Tom Gerrie, at Steve’s side on winemaking duties, the Cristom wines continue with remarkable consistency and grace.

Well, throughout the history of fine wine, particularly in Europe, iconic brands have chosen to declassify wines depending on vintage conditions and availability of quality fruit. Declassified wines can give consumers entry into some of the greatest terroirs of the world. What an opportunity not to be missed!
Each barrel of this wine receives the same immaculate care and attention to detail as the wines chosen to go into their Mt. Jefferson Cuvée and single vineyard wines only this is crafted to represent the larger Willamette Valley AVA.
Winemaking – Given the environmental factors they faced in the 2020 vintage, they relied on the experience and talent of the Cristom winemaking team to make deliberate stylistic decisions to make the highest quality wine possible. They chose to pick some blocks earlier, destem the fruit, inoculate with yeasts to shorten fermentation time and pressed even lighter to craft elegant, focused Pinot Noir.

Seamless and ethereal, the palate is light-bodied and silky with a flourish of dark spices and a long, savory finish.”

“This stunning Pinot Noir from Cristom comes from their oldest vineyard which now is over 25 years old. The wine sees 45% whole cluster fermentation (which I can pick up a bit more in this wine than the others) and 37% new French oak barrels. Red and blue plum, cedary herbs, toasted cinnamon, and a touch of tar explode from the glass. More tart than ripe on the palate, you are greeted with red and black cherry, wet tilled earth, and a hint of toasted baking spice. It’s a nicely balanced wine, with ample acidity and tannin, that will improve over the next year or two and should age for a solid decade. 2022-2032”

For us at Dhall & Nash, there always seems to be some indefinable expression of energy in the Cristom wines in their youth making them pleasurable to drink straight out of the gate. But what has always been true still remains – however good the wine is upon release, in 5-10 years’ time they will be that much better!

Cristom manage to deliver compelling aromas and flavours without sacrificing the light silkiness on the palate that is the hallmark of great wine. There is always elegance, depth, balance, and consistency. Even when Steve’s wines are “powerful”, they possess power in proportion, giving the elements context and telling an always compelling story. It is a story of family, vision, stewardship, and commitment. The beauty of Cristom wines is that they continue to be a unique blend of tradition, modernity, and finesse.
